God Has Not Given Us a Spirit of Fear

Hey sister. Pull up a chair, take a deep breath, and just be still for a moment. You’ve found your way to a safe space for women healing, and I want you to know right now, before we dive into the heart of this message: you are safe here. Your story matters here. Your heart is honored here.

In this journey of life, especially for those of us who have walked through the fire of trauma, fear can feel like an unwanted shadow. It follows us into the grocery store, it whispers to us in the quiet moments before sleep, and it tries to convince us that we are still trapped in the chapters of our lives that have already ended.

But I’m here to remind you of a truth that is stronger than any shadow. It’s a truth found in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

At Her Story: The Gathering Inc., we believe that reclaiming your power starts with identifying the lies fear tries to tell you. Fear is a thief. It steals your voice, it dampens your joy, and it tries to keep you from the beautiful, redemptive future God is still writing for you. But today, we are drawing a line in the sand.

Understanding the "Spirit of Fear"

When the Bible talks about the "spirit of fear," it’s not talking about the natural instinct that keeps you from touching a hot stove. It’s talking about a spirit of cowardice or timidity, a weight that keeps you paralyzed. For many survivors in our women’s healing community, fear is the lingering echo of trauma. It’s the "what if" that keeps you from stepping into your calling.

But notice the language Paul uses: God has not given us that spirit. If it’s not from Him, you don’t have to keep it. You don’t have to carry it. You are allowed to set it down.

The Gift of Power: Reclaiming Your Agency

The first thing God replaces fear with is Power. In the original Greek, this word is dunamis, it’s where we get the word "dynamite." This isn’t a quiet, passive kind of strength. It is an explosive, world-changing ability to overcome.

In our trauma-informed women's community, we see this power every day. It’s the power to say "no" to people who drain you. It’s the power to say "yes" to your own healing. It’s the power to stand up and tell your story after years of being told to stay silent.

When you realize that the Creator of the universe has deposited His power inside of you, the things that once terrified you start to look a little smaller. You are not a victim; you are a survivor who is learning to walk in a power that the world didn't give you and the world can't take away. If you’re feeling like you’ve lost that spark, I encourage you to read our post on The Journey Back to Self.

The Gift of Love: The Antidote to Shame

Fear and shame are best friends. Fear tells you that if people knew your real story, they would leave. Fear tells you that you are "damaged goods."

But God gives us a spirit of Love. Perfect love casts out fear. When we lean into the love of God and the love of a supportive sisterhood, shame starts to evaporate. Healing doesn't happen in isolation; it happens in connection.

At Her Story: The Gathering, we strive to be that safe space for women healing where you can be raw, unflinching, and completely yourself. When we surround ourselves with people who see our scars and call them beautiful, fear loses its grip. Love reminds us that we are worthy of care, worthy of peace, and worthy of a life that is not defined by our past battles.

The Gift of a Sound Mind: Clarity in the Chaos

Trauma does a number on our thoughts. It creates a "brain fog" where we constantly feel on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. But the third gift mentioned is a Sound Mind. This means self-discipline, self-control, and a sense of calm.

Having a sound mind doesn’t mean you’ll never feel anxious again. It means that when the waves of anxiety come, you have the tools to navigate them. It means you can distinguish between a real threat and a memory of a past threat.

One of the most powerful ways to cultivate a sound mind is to simply learn how to breathe again. We’ve talked about this before in our post, Just Breathe: Finding Your Calm in the Healing Journey. Taking control of your breath is a physical way to tell your spirit of fear that it is no longer in charge.

Turning Your Story into a Weapon Against Fear

There is a reason our community is called "Her Story." Your story is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal. When you speak your truth, you break the power of the enemy. You take the very thing fear used to keep you small: your history: and you turn it into a beacon of hope for someone else.

We have seen women move from silence to strength just by sharing a single chapter of their journey. Your story isn't a sign of weakness; it is evidence of your survival. It is proof that fear didn't win.

Walking it Out: Practical Steps to Overcome

So, how do we actually walk in this power, love, and sound mind on a Tuesday afternoon when the world feels heavy?

  1. Acknowledge the Fear, but Don't Seat It at the Table. You can say, "I feel afraid right now," without letting fear make your decisions.

  2. Lean into Community. Don't do this alone. Join us for a gathering, listen to our Podcast Videos, or reach out to a sister who understands.

  3. Replace the Script. When a fearful thought enters your mind, consciously replace it with a declaration. "I have a spirit of power. I am loved. My mind is sound."

  4. Use Your Voice. Whether it's through journaling, speaking, or even submitting a piece to our Newsletter, getting the words out of your head and into the world reduces their power to scare you.

You Are Not Alone

Sister, the journey from fear to faith isn't a sprint; it's a walk. Some days you’ll feel like a warrior, and some days you’ll just need to be held. Both are okay. The important thing is that you keep walking.

The spirit of fear has had its time in your life. It has taken enough. Today, we invite you to step into the "power, love, and sound mind" that is your divine inheritance. You are stronger than you feel, you are more loved than you know, and your story is just getting to the best part.

Healing is possible. Your story matters. And here, in this gathering, you are finally home.
